Older firearms generally used black powder for a propellant, but contemporary firearms use smokeless powder or other explosive propellants. Most modern-day firearms (with the notable exception of smoothbore shotguns) have rifled barrels to impart a stabilizing spin for the bullet for enhanced exteri
